Conventions & Standards

Imperial vs Metric Systems

Most of the world uses the International System of Units (Metric), while the US and a few other countries primarily use Imperial units. Accurate conversion is vital for engineering, international commerce, and travel.

Precision in Cooking and Baking

Cooking is an art, but baking is a science. While a "pinch" or "dash" might work for soup, specific ratios of weight (grams) are preferred for consistent baking results over volume (cups), which can vary based on how tightly packed the ingredient is.

Mass vs. Weight

In common usage, we use the terms interchangeably. However, mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the force exerted by gravity. Our converters provide the standard earth-based weight equivalencies for daily use.

Temperature Scales

Celsius is based on the freezing and boiling points of water. Fahrenheit is widely used in the US for weather and baking. Kelvin is the absolute scale used in scientific research where 0K represents absolute zero—the absence of all thermal energy.
